A match is a tiny stick of wood or piece of cardboard with a thickened mixture of flammable chemicals dropped on one end. When that end is hit on a rough surface, the resistance produces enough heat to ignite the elements and generate a small flame. Some matches are also available in the market, called strike-anywhere matches which can be ignited by striking them on any rough surface. Other safety matches are manufactured in such a way that they will ignite only when they are stuck on a special rough surface containing certain chemicals.
Woods is used to making matchsticks that must be porous enough to absorb various chemicals. It should remain stiff to resist the winding forces met when the match is struck. They should also be straight-grained and easy to function, so that they may be quickly cut into sticks. The two common kinds of wood used for this purpose are White pine and aspen.
Once the matchsticks are made by the manufacturers, they are dipped into ammonium phosphate. It is a fire retardant. This restricts the stick from smoldering after the match has gone out. During the production process, the striking ends of the matchsticks are put into hot paraffin wax. This presents a little amount of fuel to transport the flame from the burning chemicals on the tip to the matchstick itself. Once the paraffin lights off, the ammonium phosphate is used to stop the further combustion in a matchstick.
The process starts with
Cutting the match sticks
Treating the match sticks
Forming the match heads
Packaging the matches
The chemicals for each portion of the match stick head manufacturing are weighed and measured perfectly to avoid any variation in the match structure that might affect production. Operators uniformly monitor the operation and visually inspect the product at all steps of manufacture. In addition to visible inspection and other normal quality control methods, match production requires strict attention to safety.
